DIY Eco-Gift Items: Pop Can Dangling Earrings

IF ONE in your list of friendship possesses such unconventional style in fashion, and you happened to be browsing the internet for remarkable gift item ideas, you might be interested to know few unique ones that would garner “oh” and “ahs” of admiration and excitement from an eccentric fashionista of a friend. Dangling earrings, everyone? Well it’s not just any ordinary fashion accessory, but an eco-friendly handmade pair.

While purchasing unique dangling earrings from any fashion accessory boutique in a mall would cost you about a hundred and fifty pesos, a handmade pair would only be thrice less that price. Even lesser when you try out your creativity in recycled ones. So, one of my favorite do-it-yourself (DIY) gift items I want to share with you is the Pop Can Dangling Earrings.

After quenching your thirst from your canned soda, save two pop cans for your DIY accessories. You will also need small beads – with the colors of your choice – for add-on decorations, a pair of silver-coated earring hooks, a small pack of less-than-a-centimeter in diameter silver coated rings, eye-pins and flat end-pins for the materials.

You will mostly find these materials from direct suppliers of sewing garments and accessories. In Cebu, the Colon Market has everything you need. A pack of beads and earring-hooks cost about 25 to 30 pesos and you can already make up to twenty pairs. You will also need long-nosed flat and round end types of pliers to help you in locking the pins to the hook and putting the beads in place. Cutter pliers will be useful to cut out the unneeded length of pins.

A pop can has two holes forming similar to the number “8.” In one hole, you can connect the hook to the pop can through the small silver-coated ring. In the other hole, you can design it with beads inserted into the pins. Use the round end long-nosed pliers to lock the pins in place. You can create any design you want using the pop can as the main body of the dangling earrings.

When you go eco-friendly in choosing presents, you won’t just be saving your money and fascinating your eccentric fashionista of friends; you can also make a little but valuable contribution in the preservation of the environment, though it may not be that much, but at least it is a vital single step ahead of the others.
