The next part of Twilight was THE NEW MOON, which was popularized in 2009. In this part, the setting started in Bella's dream. It was a picture of her in her grandmother's looks. She dreamed of the future; still being together with Edward yet Bella already looked very old for him. Bella woke up from her dream, and her dad greeted her "HAPPY BIRTHDAY." Hence, Bella worried about her getting older, each year.
Edward tried to protect Bella by sacrificing to be away from her. Bella's stubborn desire to be like Edward's kind to attain immortality and be with him forever, made Edward decide to move far away from her.
While Edward was away, Bella's loneliness was eased by Jacob's friendly, protective and caring personality, as she found herself enjoying his company, and eventually, fell in love with him.
But, unknown to Bella, Jacob has strong genes from their ancestors, which makes him a part of the fighting pack, the pack of werewolves, trained to fight against the vampires for the safety of their tribes and at present, the locals, as well. This is a responsibility that Jacob couldn't let go of. Jacob's hot blooded kind and Edward's cold-blooded kind were known to be mortal enemies way back their ancestors could trace. So, the real battle, the rivalry for Bella's love, between Jacob and Edward intensified the story.
Until the Cullen's realized what Victoria is after -- Bella -- to revenge for the death of her lover.
In the first part of the movie, Twilight, Edward killed James, Victoria's lover to protect Bella.
So, both Jacob and Edward want to protect Bella from Victoria and her newborns. This created an alliance between the pack of werewolves and the Cullens.
